Il Museo della Città, allestito nella parte più antica del monastero (IX secolo), e in particolare nelle sale adibite a refettorio, cucine, e cantine, è essenzialmente didattico e si propone come un percorso introduttivo alla visita dell’abbazia e della Città di Bobbio.
Il restauro e l’allestimento sono stati realizzati grazie a finanziamenti europei erogati in occasione del Giubileo del 2000. Sopra al portale di ingresso è possibile ammirare un affresco, frammentario, raffigurante Papa Gregorio Magno. Ai piedi della raffigurazione è riportato un monito della regola di San Colombano: “NE QUID NIMIS” (niente di troppo, nessun eccesso): il Santo che predicava e praticava la povertà e l’astinenza intimava ai monaci di essere parchi verso il cibo. Sotto l’affresco, notiamo l’architrave in arenaria del portale romanico originale decorato con una croce e due faccine apotropaiche, amuleti di origine celtica. Il pavimento in cotto della prima sala risale al XIII sec. così come il fregio in terracotta che decora la finestra a destra dell’ingresso. Sulla parete di fondo si può ammirare un affresco rappresentante la Crocefissione: sebbene i moduli pittorici appaiano arcaicizzanti, il dipinto è databile dopo il 1449, anno in cui arrivarono i monaci benedettini. In primo piano, infatti, sono raffigurati, a destra, San Colombano con il libro della sua Regola chiuso e a sinistra, san Benedetto con il libro della Regola aperto: la raffigurazione vuole quindi testimoniare il passaggio da una regola all’altra. Inoltre la raffigurazione di san Colombano con il saio nero dei benedettini anziché con quello bianco proprio della sua congregazione, testimonia la committenza benedettina dell’affresco.
La seconda sale introduce, attraverso pannelli e ricostruzioni, all’attività dello scriptorium; proseguendo, nelle cantine si trovano alcuni pannelli che approfondiscono la storia del monachesimo.
The City Museum, established in the oldest part of the monastery (ninth century), and located mainly in the refectory, kitchen and cellars, seeks to introduce the visitor to the Abbey and the city of Bobbio.
The restoration was completed thanks to EU funding for the 2000 Jubilee. Above the main entrance there is an incomplete fresco that portrays Pope Gregorius Magnus. At the bottom of the image there is a word to the wise about Saint Columban’s rule: “NE QUID NIMIS” (not too much, no excess). The Saint preached and practiced poverty and abstinence especially in relation to food. Below the fresco there is the sandstone architrave that belonged to the original Romanesque portal decorated with a cross and two small faces as Celtic good luck charms.
The cotto tile floor dates back to the thirteenth century as does the terracotta decoration of the window on the right of the entrance. On the back wall there is a fresco representing the Crucifixion. Though the style seems archaic, the painting dates back to sometime after 1449, when the Benedictine monks arrived. In the foreground there is, on the right, Saint Columban who holds the closed book of his Regula (Rule) and on the left is Saint Benedict holding the open book of his Regula (Rule). This signifies the shift from one rule to another. Saint Columban wears the black habit of the Benedictines rather than the white one of his congregation. This signifies that the Benedictine’s were the ones who commissioned the fresco.
Through panels and reconstructions the second hall leads to the activity of the Scriptorium. In the cellars there are panels that tell the story of the monastery.
Le Musée de la Ville, installé dans la partie la plus ancienne du monastère (IXème Siècle), plus précisément dans les locaux qui servaient de réfectoire, cuisines et caves, est un musée qui se veut avant tout didactique et préparatoire à la visite guidée de l'abbaye et de la ville de Bobbio.
La restauration des locaux et la réalisation du Musée ont été financées par la Communauté Européenne, à l'occasion du Jubilé de l'an 2000. Au dessus de la porte d'entrée on peut admirer les fragments d'une fresque représentant le pape Grégoire le Grand; à ses pieds on peut lire cette devise de la règle de saint Colomban: “NE QUID NIMIS” (rien de trop, pas d'excès); le saint qui prêchait et pratiquait la pauvreté et l'abstinence, recommandait aux moines d'être parcimonieux avec la nourriture. En dessous de la fresque on remarquera l'architrave en pierre calcaire du portail roman originale décoré d'une croix et de deux figures apotropaïques, amulettes d'origine celtique. Le pavé en terre cuite de la première salle remonte au XIIème Siècle, tout comme le bas-relief qui orne la fenêtre à droite de l'entrée. Sur le mur du fond on peut admirer une fresque représentant une crucifixion: de style archaïsant, la fresque fut exécutée après 1499, l'année de l'arrivée des moines bénédictins. On a représenté en effet sur la droite saint Colomban tenant le livre de la Règle fermé et sur la gauche, saint Benoît avec le livre de la Règle ouvert, pour bien témoigner du passage d'une Règle à l'Autre; de plus Colomban a été représenté vêtu de la robe noire des bénédictins et non de celle des colombains de couleur blanche, ce qui indique bien que ce furent les bénédictins à ordonner la réalisation de la fresque.
La deuxième salle, au moyen de panneaux illustratifs et par des reconstitutions, évoque les activités du scriptorium; en poursuivant la visite dans les caves, on trouvera d'autres panneaux qui illustrent et approfondissent l'histoire de la vie monastique.
